Inlays and onlays
An inlay or onlay is a solid, custom-made repair, bonded into a tooth that is too damaged for a filling but not damaged enough to need a crown. An inlay sits within the cusps. An onlay also covers one or more of them.

An inlay, or an onlay?
Inlay
- Fits inside the cusps, in the dip of the tooth.
- For damage in the middle of the biting surface.
- Keeps the most tooth of the two.
Onlay
- Covers one or more of the pointed cusps as well.
- For a tooth with a broken or worn corner.
- Protects a weakened cusp from splitting off.
They are the same treatment in different sizes. Which one you need is decided by how far the damage reaches, not by preference, and often only once the old filling is out.

FAQ
What does an inlay or onlay cost?
We go over the quote with you before any work is done. We bill your insurer directly wherever your plan allows it. We make every attempt to work with your insurer so your plan covers as much as it can, and what a plan finally pays is the insurer's decision. The practice is a registered provider for the Canadian Dental Care Plan. There is more on fees and insurance.
What is the difference between an inlay and an onlay?
An inlay fits within the cusps, the raised points on the biting surface. An onlay covers one or more of those cusps as well. The choice depends on how much of the biting surface is gone.
Why not just have a large filling?
A very large filling in a back tooth can act as a wedge under chewing force and split the tooth. An inlay or onlay is made outside the mouth and bonded in, which distributes that force more evenly.
How many appointments does it take?
Traditionally two: one to prepare the tooth and take an impression, and one to fit the finished restoration, with a temporary in between.
How does the cost compare with a crown?
They occupy similar territory. The reason to choose an inlay or onlay is usually conservation of natural tooth rather than price.
