Whitening, aligners or veneers. Which one do I need?
It depends on what is wrong. Whitening lightens natural enamel and changes nothing else. Invisalign moves teeth, but does not change their shape or shade. Veneers can change both the shape and the colour. They are considered permanent, because enamel is removed to make room for them, but a veneer may need replacing in time: most last 10 to 12 years.
Is there an orthodontist at the practice?
No. Invisalign here is done by Dr. Osborne, one of our general dentists. Anything beyond what aligners do well is a referral. We would rather say that than start what we cannot finish.
Can I have whitening or veneers if I have a filling to do?
Not yet. Nothing cosmetic starts before the teeth under it are sound. Whitening an unhealthy mouth stores up a much larger problem for later. So does bonding veneers onto teeth with decay.
What happens at a first cosmetic appointment?
It is an examination, not a sales talk. We look at the teeth and gums first, because nothing cosmetic starts before what is underneath is sound. Now and then the honest answer is that what you actually want is a clean.
Will you tell me if I do not need it?
Yes. If whitening would get you most of the way, we will say so before suggesting veneers. If aligners cannot move your teeth as far as you want, we will say that too.
