The common thread is that too little sound tooth is left for a filling to hold, or to stop the tooth cracking.
A crown, or a veneer?
Crown
- Covers the whole tooth, so it holds a weak one together.
- The choice after a root canal or a crack.
- More of the tooth is shaped away to make room.
Veneer
- Faces the front only, so far less tooth is removed.
- Right when the tooth is sound and it is about looks.
- Does not strengthen a tooth, and can come away from a weak one.
The short version: a crown is for a tooth that needs protecting, a veneer is for a sound tooth that needs to look different. Strength decides it, not looks.

What does a crown cost?
We go over the quote with you before any work is done. We bill your insurer directly wherever your plan allows it. We make every attempt to work with your insurer so your plan covers as much as it can, and what a plan finally pays is the insurer's decision. When is a crown needed instead of a filling?
When too little natural tooth remains to hold a filling securely, after a root canal, or where a tooth is cracked and needs to be held together. A large filling in a weakened tooth can act like a wedge and split it.
How long does a crown last, and is it guaranteed?
Many last well over a decade. Lifespan depends on the bite, on grinding, and on how well the gum line around it is kept clean, because decay can still start at the edge. Fillings are guaranteed for two years and crowns for five years against defects in the materials or the lab work, provided you keep up regular check-ups and cleanings.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is frozen for the preparation appointment. Some sensitivity between appointments, while a temporary crown is in place, is common and settles once the final crown is fitted.
Can a crowned tooth still decay?
The crown itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth beneath it can, particularly at the margin where the crown meets the gum. That margin is checked at every cleaning.
