Night guards for teeth grinding, made in South Edmonton

Direct billingCDCP registeredSame dentist every visit

A night guard is a custom-fitted cover worn over your teeth while you sleep. It absorbs the force of grinding and clenching so your teeth are not worn down, and it takes the pressure off your jaw joint.

How yours is made

Scanned, designed and printed here

No trays of putty, and nothing posted away to an outside laboratory.

ExaminationWe check the wear on your teeth and how the jaw moves, and talk through what you have been noticing.
Digital scanA scanner traces the shape of your teeth. It takes a few minutes and there is no tray and no moulding material.
Designed hereThe guard is designed on that scan, with the thickness matched to how hard you grind.
Printed in the practiceIt prints on our own machine in the building, so it is not queued behind an outside lab's schedule.
FittingYou come back to have it fitted and eased. It should sit firmly without pressing on any one tooth.

Why people come in

You may be grinding without knowing

Most grinding happens during sleep, so the first sign is usually something you notice in the morning rather than the grinding itself.

A sore or tight jaw in the morningThe muscles have been working all night. It often eases through the day and returns the next morning.
Headaches that start at the templesThe main closing muscle runs up the side of the head, so a night of clenching can read as a headache rather than a dental problem.
Teeth that are flattening or chippingWorn edges and small chips on the biting surfaces are often the first thing we see, before you have noticed anything.
Teeth sensitive to coldGrinding wears through the enamel and exposes the softer layer underneath, which feels cold air and cold drinks.
Earache with nothing wrong in the earThe jaw joint sits directly in front of the ear canal, so joint strain is commonly felt as earache.
A partner who hears itOften how people find out. If someone has told you, it is worth having the teeth looked at even if nothing hurts yet.

A fitted guard, or one from the chemist?

Made for your mouth

What you get
  • Built from a scan of your own teeth, so it stays put.
  • Thickness matched to how hard you actually grind.
  • Adjusted in the chair if a spot presses.
  • Made to last, and checked at each visit.

Boil-and-bite

What you get
  • One shape for every mouth, held by biting on it.
  • Bulk that can disturb sleep or fall out.
  • No way to adjust it if it rubs.
  • Cheaper to buy, replaced more often.

A shop-bought guard is better than nothing if you are grinding tonight. It is not a long-term answer, and a poorly fitting guard can change how the teeth meet.

Looking after it

Four things worth knowing

A guard is worn every night for years, so how it is looked after decides how long it lasts.

Rinse and brush it dailyRinse it when you take it out and brush it with a soft brush and cool water. Bacteria build up on it exactly as they do on teeth.
Never in hot waterHeat distorts the material and the guard will not fit afterwards. Cool water only, and keep it out of a hot car.
Bring it in if it rubsA spot that presses on one tooth can be eased in a few minutes. Living with it is how people stop wearing the guard.
Bring it to your check-upsWe look at the wear on the guard as well as on your teeth. How it is wearing tells us whether the grinding is getting worse.

FAQ

What does a night guard cost?

We go over the quote with you before any work is done. We bill your insurer directly wherever your plan allows it. We make every attempt to work with your insurer so your plan covers as much as it can, and what a plan finally pays is the insurer's decision. The practice is a registered provider for the Canadian Dental Care Plan. There is more on fees and insurance.

How do I know if I grind my teeth?

Waking with a sore jaw or a headache is the usual first sign. So are teeth that look flattened or chipped at the edges, new sensitivity to cold, and a partner who hears it. Many people grind for years without knowing, until a dentist spots the wear.

Why not just buy one from a pharmacy?

A store-bought guard is a generic shape softened in hot water. Yours is built from a digital scan of your own teeth and printed here. It fits closely and stays put. It also spreads the force evenly, instead of loading a few teeth.

Will it stop my jaw pain?

A night guard reduces the load on the jaw joint and muscles, which for many people eases morning soreness and headaches. It manages the effects of clenching rather than curing the underlying habit.

How long does a night guard last?

It depends how heavily you grind. Guards are checked at regular appointments and replaced when the material has worn through or the fit has changed.

How do I clean it?

Rinse it and brush it gently with a soft brush after each use, and let it dry fully before storing it in its case. Avoid hot water, which can distort the shape.
