Agreed before anything is removedThe shape and the shade are settled with you first, because removing enamel cannot be undone. Nothing is prepared until you are happy with the plan.

PreparationA thin layer of enamel is removed so the veneer sits flush rather than standing proud of the tooth.

ImpressionThe shape is recorded and sent to the laboratory that makes the porcelain, which takes about two weeks.

TemporariesYou leave with temporary facings so nothing looks or feels unfinished.

FittingThe veneers are tried in, checked with you in daylight, then bonded and the bite adjusted.

What veneers cost depends on how many teeth you are covering and which material suits them. We go over the quote with you before any work is done.

Direct billingWe bill your insurer directly wherever your plan allows it, so in most cases there is nothing for you to claim back yourself.

Only what you needWe do not add procedures to make up a number. If something can safely be watched rather than treated, we will say so and you will not be billed for it.

What a veneer is good at

Veneers change how a front tooth looks. They are not a repair, and they are not a substitute for straightening.

A shade that will not lightenTeeth darkened by age, tetracycline or an old root canal often do not respond to whitening. A veneer covers rather than bleaches.

Chips and worn edgesA chipped or shortened front tooth can be rebuilt to its original shape.

Small gaps between front teethA narrow gap can be closed by making the two teeth slightly wider.

Teeth that look slightly crookedA veneer can mask a mild rotation. Anything more than mild is better straightened first, and we will say so.

Teeth of uneven lengthEvening up the edges often does more for a smile than changing the colour does.

Not for a weak toothA tooth that is heavily filled or cracked needs a crown, which covers it completely. A veneer only faces the front.

A veneer, a crown, or whitening?

Three different answers to what sounds like one question. Which is right depends on how much tooth is there and what is wrong with it.

The tooth is sound, you want it a different shade or shape

The tooth is heavily filled, cracked, or has had a root canal

CrownIt covers the whole tooth and holds it together. A veneer would not protect it.

The teeth are sound and you only want them lighter

Whitening firstIt is cheaper, it removes nothing, and it is reversible. Try it before committing.

Whitening does not change the colour of porcelain. If you plan to do both, whiten first and match the veneers to the result.

Afterwards

Making them last

Porcelain does not decay, but the tooth underneath still can, and the bond at the edge is where problems start.

Clean the marginThe join between porcelain and tooth is where decay begins. Floss it daily, exactly as you would a natural tooth.

Wear a guard if you grindGrinding chips porcelain. If you clench at night, a guard protects the investment.

Not a toolNo opening packets, biting nails or chewing ice. Porcelain is strong in compression and brittle at the edge.

Expect to replace them one dayWell-looked-after veneers commonly last ten years or more, but they are not permanent. Plan for renewal rather than being surprised by it.

FAQ

Is the tooth underneath changed permanently?

In most cases yes. A thin layer of enamel is removed so the veneer sits flush, and enamel does not grow back. From that point the tooth will always need a veneer or crown on it.

How long do veneers last?

Most last 10 to 12 years. They can chip or come away, particularly with grinding, and the gum line can recede over time, which shows the margin.

Veneers or whitening?

Whitening is cheaper, reversible and changes shade only. Veneers change shape, position and shade but involve permanently altering the tooth. If shade is the only concern, whitening is usually the place to start.

Can I have just one?

Yes, and it is common after a chip or where one tooth is darker. Matching a single veneer to the teeth around it is more demanding than doing several together.

Do I need to avoid anything afterwards?

Do not use your front teeth to open things or bite very hard foods, and wear a night guard if you grind. Porcelain is strong but it is brittle at a thin edge.
